National History Museum Exhibit Event

Last week we were thrilled to cater a VIP event at the museum and get a sneak peak at the highly anticipated exhibit!  The Natural History Museum’s newest exhibit, Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs, features beautifully preserved mummies and artifacts from Egypt and Peru

The exhibit does an amazing job of showcasing ancient Egyptian and Peruvian cultures along with the Mummies, and our menu and decor did the same! We spiced up the event with authentic Egyptian and Peruvian flavors with guests enjoying authentic regional dishes such as delicious falafel with tatziki sauce and Peruvian empanadas. The decor would not be complete without this traditional Anubis statue, the Egyptian Protector of Graves, and rare Egyptian silk fabric draped on the buffets!

Pagani Huayra – Auto Gallery Event at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, Catering by LA Spice

We’re very excited to share some photos and a video from the Pagani event catered by LA Spice last week. Held at the Petersen Automotive Museum, the event showcased the rare Italian “bespoke” Pagani Huayra. The catering reflected the Italian, hand-crafted theme through a luxurious Italian Crudo Bar with action chefs creating small plates, made to order, and sleek, modern décor adorning the room. Car enthusiasts were also served delicious appetizers as they enjoyed the sights and as they traveled around the room, they could indulge in desserts at a beautiful, decadent chocolate station and even have freshly rolled cigars. You can relive this elegant night through this video created by Pagani or through pictures of the event here:

What's it like feeding 700 potential astronauts in the Mojave Desert?

Event Planning Los Angeles LA Spice in the Mojave Desert

Yesterday’s event might just change the future in travel.

And we were lucky enough to cater it

The  “Your Flight DNA” event took place at the Virgin Galactic Hangar at the Mojave Air and Space Port. Richard Branson shared his space travel enterprise with 680 guests, or shall we say, potential future astronauts.

Guests heard Branson, pilots, and the original visionaries speak about this exciting progress in out-of-this-world travel as they marveled at the Space Ship Two and White Knight Two , the crafts that plan to be the universe’s  first commercial airline.

We all truly enjoyed our “behind the hangar” experience.

Of course, inside of the hangar where the event took place was top secret, so we are unable to share that experience with you through photos. However, here are some behind the scenes photos.

Corporate Lunch Meeting Done Right.

How does a caterer help a client meet their goals for a corporate lunch meeting?

The key to catering a corporate event is to meet the goals of the corporate client while showcasing the company’s essence and personality.

As event planners we must find creative solutions in illustrating the client’s message and image.

We helped an aerospace manufacturing company host a luncheon for the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). The President and CEO of NAM spoke about creating a positive future for manufacturing in the US.

This event is a perfect example of the corporate process.

In order to make this luncheon a success, we started with the goals of the client.

Client’s Goals:
1. Create connections among guests and their company
2. Highlight the ircompany and manufacturing in America and in general
3.  Gain membership for National Association of Manufacturers
How did we help the client meet these goals?

Goal 1. How did we help create connections among guests and company?

Surprisingly, choosing the menu and layout of the lunch was important in fulfilling this goal.
We chose a buffet line so people could continue conversation with others while getting their food. The client did not want any food that was messy to eat order for the guests to easily continue communicating with others, so they chose kebabs, a cut-free entree.

We placed the bar at the beginning of the hall at the entrance so people could immediately get a drink when they walked in the door. In order to get to the buffet line and lunchroom, they had to walk down a long hallway. The space between the bar and buffet gave room for the guests to mingle and make connections with one another.

Goal 2. How did we highlight the company and manufacturing in America?

Between the bar entrance and lunch room, was a long empty hallway. With the help of the client’s staff, we created an “art gallery”, showcasing the clients’ manufacturing parts, displaying them on pedestals and labeling them with the clients’ catchy titles.

The client framed posters that beautifully depicted manufacturing in action, including vintage aerospace and manufacturing posters.

Also displayed were photos of the company’s history, an addition that enables the guests to learn more about the client and manufacturing.

Even our table set design embodied the company.
We represented the blue grey hues of metals in manufacturing with nova slate blue linens and the metallic silver pots holding our floral centerpieces. The purples in the floral arrangements meshed beautifully with the blue linens.

We also showcased manufacturing’s capability with our centerpieces.

A company welder made dragons out of manufacturing parts for centerpieces to match the “Slay the Dragon” discussion theme. The dragons were an example of manufacturing resourcefulness and showed just how creative the employees in the manufacturing field can be. This was a key component at the event that not only showed the personality of the company, but also connected to the goal of the corporate luncheon: to illustrate manufacturing at its finest.

After lunch and the discussion, the event ended with tours where guests were able to view the property and learn more about the company.

Goal 3. How did we help gain membership for NAM?

The layout of the luncheon was key in helping gain membership for NAM. We wanted guests to easily listen and follow the guest speaker.  At the front of the room, we placed a wood podium and wireless mic for the speaker and two LCD monitors to show the speaker’s slideshows and video clipsThis ensured the luncheon’s message was conveyed to both audio and visual learners.

In the planning of a corporate meting, it is an added touch to make sure that no one’s back is facing the speaker. While setting up, we placed all the chairs at the tables to face the speaker, so that guests could comfortably listen and take notes during the presentation.

Remember, a Los Angeles event planner isn’t someone who just provides food for an event. Caterers work with the client and makes his or her vision a reality. Meeting the goals of the client is key in making a corporate luncheon successful.

A Gluten Free, Sugar Free Baby Shower?

Yes, it is possible!

We catered a baby shower for our cafe manager Chiara last weekend, who is gluten and sugar free.

Although it sounds like an impossible trio, having a baby shower with only gluten and sugar free options is possible!

We made Chiara a superhero themed watermelon and fruit cake. The only ingredient? Fruit!

We also served owl chocolate cupcakes to align with the baby shower’s owl theme. Gluten free flour was the base, and no refined sugar was in the cupcake or frosting, only agave. Using nuts to create the owl face was a perfect gluten and sugar free addition!

Add some delicious gluten and sugar free small bites, and you’ve got yourself a party.

Summer Peach Party

It’s that time of year again: stone fruits are in season, and we’re crazy about peaches.

From their alluring sweet smell, their gorgeous hue, to their candied taste, they are the quintessential summer fruit.

Their triple-threat qualities are our prime inspiration for a summer party theme.

Summer-inspired, youthful, airy, and feminine, the event is decorated in peach, yellow, rose, and cream. The peaches are the centerpieces in the decor, displayed in baskets, glass bowls, or vases, giving off their appetizing sweet smell. The event takes place outdoors, decorated by summer’s bounty of peach-colored flowers and greenery.

Sample Menu:

LA Spice Cafe‘s special Summertime Peach Sangria

Sugared pureed fresh and luscious white peaches with Riesling, triple sec, peach schnapps, coconut syrup, and fresh vanilla bean

Peach Caprese

Layered sliced freestone peaches, burrata cheese, prosciutto, and basil drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar

Grilled Peaches

Halved yellow peaches, served alongside honey grilled salmon or chicken

Peaches and Cream

Sliced donut peaches and homemade cream, served in a martini glass

African Theme Catering Event

When it came down to choosing a theme for a dinner and cocktail reception for a leading furniture design and production company, we looked no further than the event’s location for theme inspiration.

Since the African Mammal Hall at the Natural History Museum was the location of this Annual Awards Gala, we decided on an African theme.

The Setting –

An impressive wall-to-wall diorama of African elephants and animal exhibits surrounded the seated guests at the NHM venue.

Our servers were dressed as safari guides, wearing khaki pants, white polo shirts, and pith helmets.

We used outdoor elements such as bamboo leaves, flowers, and wood for our appetizer plates and table set design.

The Menu –

We offered an eclectic African themed menu, highlighting the delicious cuisines from North, East, West, and South Africa.

Our menu highlighted common herbs, spices, produce, and meats from Africa, such as orange, saffron, mint, mango, ostrich, cous cous, moroccan spices, and yogurt.

A Taste of History: Artistic Evolution

We’re “Mad Men” for the Natural History Museum…

We recently catered an event at The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County that highlighted the new exhibit, Artistic Evolution, a part of the larger initiative, Pacific Standard Time: Art in Los Angeles 1945-1980.

Attended by 120 guests, the event focused on a time when the museum was the premiere art venue for the City of Los Angeles. Art historian Dr. Charlotte Eyerman presented an in-depth look at the show’s paintings, drawings, and prints from Los Angeles’ past, including works from artists like John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Lee Mullican, and Mel Ramos, pictured here with Steve & LeAnne Schwartz (me!) in front of his picture “The Atom”.

To match the post-war era art displayed throughout the event, we created a retro-50’s vibe focusing on nostalgic eats and mod details.

The Yum:
“Daily News Read All About It”
Appetizers:
French Onion Dip in Martini Glasses served with Celery, Carrots, and Tomatoes
Swedish Meatballs on Skewers
Classic Deviled Eggs
Lamb Kabobs with Mint Jelly
Signature 1950’s
Drinks:
Classic Martini with Orange Bitters and a Lemon Twist
Old Fashioned with Bourbon, Bitters, with a Sugary Twist of Orange Peel and Cherry
Classic Cosmopolitan with Vodka, Cranberry Juice, and a Squeeze of Lime
“Breaking News…Dinner Time…in the Fin Whale Passage”
Entrees:
Steak Diane, a Sauteed Thinly Sliced Pounded Filet Basted in a Rich Cognac Sauce
Sauteed Chicken Breast Supreme with a Creamy Mushroom-Sherry Sauce
Caesar Salad with Garlic Croutons and Shaved Parmesan
Peas and Pearl Onion
Macaroni & Cheese
Creamy Mashed Potatoes with Chives
Nostalgic 1950’s
Dessert:
Strawberry Pop Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce

The Look:
The event had a retro feel, decorated in black, white, and red accents, surrounded by the amazing natural artifacts of the museum.

The centerpieces of deep red amaryllis and roses created a striking contrast on the black linen and the white of the china and wood chairs.  We even used a retro-elegant napkin fold reminescent of fine dining establishments of the era.

We can’t wait to hear about Pacific Standard Time’s next new art exhibit!
